Course description

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex autism spectrum condition characterised by high anxiety and a need to be in control. As a result of high anxiety individuals with PDA can find everyday demands and requests intolerable. Often children and young people with PDA can display behaviours that are challenging to others.

This course will be relevant to staff who work with or support families who have children with autism and a demand avoidant profile. The course is interactive and will equip attendees with a range of strategies to use, or to advise parents to use when working with or caring for children with PDA.

This course will cover the basic theory around PDA and provide attendees with an excellent “toolkit” of strategies that they can use or pass on to those who care for children with PDA.

This training session will be delivered by Laura Kerbey founder of Positive Autism Support and Training. Laura has been working with children and young people with autism and other special needs for over 15 years. She was the Assistant Head Teacher, then Head Teacher at an independent special school for children with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism.

Training objectives

By the end of the session delegates will be able to:

• Explain the meaning of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA).
• Analyse the impact PDA has on a child, teenager or young adult and how they might be supported.
• Identify the key principles of positive behaviour management when working with children, teenagers and young adults with PDA.
• Describe the effects that PDA has on learning and how to reduce the impact of this.
