Course description

It is a challenging time for school leadership and Governing bodies as budgets shrink and expenditure increases!

This course will examine the governors' role in the budget setting process; the key points they should be aware of; what they need to budget for; the need to link the budget and the school development plan (SDP) and what questions governors might want to ask.  As well as the importance of monitoring the Budget throughout the hear and how this might be done.

There will also be a section particular to the lockdown of schools this school year.

Training objectives

  • To consider the role of the school governor in the budget setting process

  • To develop an understanding of the different sources of schools funding

  • To begin to understand the links between school priorities and budget setting

  • To develop corrective strategies in respect of "overspending and underspending" school budgets

  • To gain an understanding of the legal requirements relating to schools and budget setting

  • To understand the essential steps in setting a school's budget

  • To understand what information should be provided to Governors with respect to monitoring and therefore what questions to ask
